Jogeshwari Caves

The Jogeshwari Caves are some of the earliest Buddhist cave temples sculptures located in the Mumbai suburb of Jogeshwari, India. The caves are located off the Western Express Highway, and are surrounded by encroachments. The caves are used as a temple by the encroachers. The caves are classified as endangered as sewage and waste enter the premises. They are also infested with bats.

A long flight of stairs, which have idols of Dattatreya, Hanuman and Ganesh lining the walls, lead you to the main hall of this cave. At the end of the stairs there are many pillars and a Lingam, along with relics of two doormen. The cave also has an idol and footprints of goddess Jogeshwari (Yogeshwari), whom the area is named after. It is conveniently located and you can either drive or take any mode of public transport to reach the place. Jogeshwari railway station is located at a distance of 3 km from it.

HOW TO REACH: The nearest station is Jogeshwari. One can reach Jogeshwari Caves by boarding a rickshaw from Jogeshwari station from the eastern side. It can also be reached from the Western Express Highway and the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.
