Mahakali Caves
Mahakali Caves, earlier known as Kondivita Caves, are located between Aarey Milk colony and Borivali National park in Mumbai. These are rock cut caves, carved out of solid hard rocks, with color of black basalt and are located at scenic picturesque Udayagiri hills. These caves, which served as Buddhist monasteries, date back to two thousand years.
These caves consist of about 19 caves, of which 4 caves are in the southeastern side and 15 others in the northwestern region. The main cave is considered to be the 9th cave and it contains figures of Buddha and also many stupas. Many tourists visit the Mahakali caves every year, especially by the people interested in archeology. One can reach here from Andheri East station using the BEST service or by auto. The cave property belongs to the ASI (Archeological Survery of India) which is currently monitoring illegal business encroachments in that area and taking care of its much needed restoration.
